Mullai Periyar Dam - The Stand by Tamilnadu

In the world, where countries are fighting against terrorism, every nation faces some internal threat in one form or the other.  India is no exception to this.  The problems include Jammu and Kashmir issue in the north to the Tamil issues in the south and Rann of Kutch in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east.

Tamilnadu faces a series of issues.  Hogenakkal water dispute, Cauvery water dispute, Krishna river sharing issue and fishermen assault by Srilankan navy add to the list. The issue of Mullai Periyar dam is the most recent controversy. Both Kerala and TN are heating up the matter.  The kerala goverrnment neither confirms to the orders of the Supreme court nor is ready to accept what the expert committee say. The central government is not in the mood to solve the issues.

The Periyar river is one of the few perennial rivers in the south India.  The stand of the Kerala government is not rational.  The Oommen Chandy government promises that the Tamilnadu will be provided the same amount of water from the new dam as from the existing dam.  But this assurance cannot be said that it would be kept. In future, Tamilnadu may have to listen to what the Kerala government orders for this matter.  This is what the Tamilnadu people and politicians fear the most.

To the point, the construction of new dam is not at all required. It drains the money into no useful subject. The expect committee has confirmed that the leakage in the dam is normal as any other dam and the dam is not in jeopardy. It can raise the dam level to 152 feet with no fear of danger.

The kerala government does not think about the benefits that it derives from Tamilnadu. A certain part of the electricity generated in the Neyveli Thermal Power Station is being shared by Kerala.  If the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant gets its shape and approval, Kerala will be provided a considerable amount of the power generated.  The Kerala government does ever think about it.

The Kerala government passed a resolution in their assembly that the deciding authority whether to rise or reduce the level of storage of water in all the dams in their territory vests with them.  This resolution was passed despite the Supreme Court ordered to rise the water level in the dam.

If the Kerala government is so reluctant over this matter, the Tamilnadu government can also pass certain resolution that we will not share the power generated by our plants with any other states.  If this is passed, the Kerala government has, in anyway, to accept the rationale behind the issue.

Mr.Vaiko, the founder of MDMK, is to an extent right in his views. He claims that the economic sanctions be passed against the Kerala government and all the nine paths that connects Kerala with Tamilnadu has to be blocked. Then the Kerala government has amend its resolution and comply with the Supreme Court order.

In real sense, no one wants such situations to happen.  The people of Tamilnadu wants only water not violence. The violence against the Tamils in Kerala is the first attack to be started and in response, Tamils waited for a time. Still, they didnot attack the Keralites, they attacked only their shops.

The  Tamilnadu government provides security to the buses of Kerala till the border. But why does the Kerala government fail to provide the same to the Tamilnadu buses in Kerala atleast in the prominent shrines. They are attacked even in shrines where peace is said to prevail.

The solutions to all the issues can be brought. But the politicians make it big.  They stir up the people's sentiments.  Let's hope the New Year will ease the situation and bring happiness to the people of both the states.

(Note: The blog may be supporting the Tamils. But this is written in keeping rationales behind the issue in mind. The ideas and views are just for the solutions, not seditious in nature.)
